RType 1 is a side scrolling shooter and is the conversion of Irem's arcade game originally released in 1987. The Bydo Empire, a mysterious alien civilization and life form, is about to take over the Earth and the solar system. The R-9 star fighter seems to be humanity's only hope against the invasion and the small ship is sent to stop the massive threat. The fighter can use an arsenal of weapons including a standard Vulcan gun and ballistic missiles. But the real super-weapon of the ship is the force - a glowing orb made from alien technology and its basic function it to float near the R-9 and to protect it. It can however be upgraded throughout the game or charged up to fire powerful blasts of energy. Another important feature of the Force is the way how it can be shot in whatever direction it's facing - this tactic is often necessary to take down the various bosses or simply wreak havoc to the Bydo Empire. Unlike the American edition of the game, RType was released in Japan on two HuCards and the version tested here only includes the first four stages from the arcade game (The Encounter, Life Forms in a Cave, Giant Warship and A Base on the War Front).
TRIVIA RType I for the PC-Engine was released on March 25, 1988 in Japan by Hudson Soft.

In 1988, the standard of HuCARD capacity was only 2 MegaBits and Hudson Soft, obviously, couldn't make RType fit in such a small amount of space. Or at least this is the story as it is generally told. So two different games were released a few months apart. The first one only features the first four stages from the arcade game and the second episode includes the rest of the game. A password is given to the player at the end of RType 1 to start RType 2 with all the weapons and power-ups slowly accumulated in the first episode. A second password, given at the end of the second game, can be entered in RType 1 to access the second loop (The password menu can be accessed by pressing Select and Run on the title screen).
TIPS AND TRICKS Here is the password to start the second loop. At the title screen, press Select and Run to start the password menu. Then enter the following code: DLG-2600-DN
