R-8M Total Percussion Sound Module © 1989 Roland.

the Roland R-8M Total Percussion Sound Module was the rackmount companion to the famous R-8 Human Rhythm Composer. Designed for studio and MIDI-based setups, it retained the R-8's high-quality 16-bit percussion sound engine but removed the pads and onboard sequencer. Instead, it was intended to be controlled from an external MIDI sequencer, drum pads, or keyboard controller. The R-8M became popular in professional studios because it offered Roland's acclaimed percussion sounds in a compact rack format with extensive expansion capabilities.

    TECHNICAL
    1U rackmount design
    68 internal percussion sounds
16-bit PCM samples at 44.1 kHz
    12-note polyphony
MIDI In / Out / Thru
Stereo outputs + 6 individual outputs
    Headphone output
    32 user patches
    16 Feel Patches
    3 front-panel SN-R8 PCM card slots
RAM card slot for storage and backup
LCD display with sound editing functions

    TRIVIA
The R-8M was produced from 1989 to 1994.

It is essentially the rack version of the Roland R-8 Human Rhythm Composer.

Unlike the desktop R-8, it has three simultaneous PCM expansion slots, allowing access to multiple expansion libraries at once.

It retains Roland's famous Feel Patch technology, which can alter incoming MIDI performances to create more realistic percussion expression.

Many electronic musicians particularly sought the Electronic and Dance cards because they contained classic electronic drum sounds including TR-808 and TR-909-inspired material. Community discussions still highlight these cards as favorites.

The R-8M remains popular among vintage MIDI studio enthusiasts because it integrates easily into modern DAW setups via MIDI.
