    JX-3P - Programmable Preset Polyphonic Synthesizer © 1983 Roland.

The Roland JX-3P Programmable Preset Polyphonic Synthesizer was an early hybrid analog synthesizer that combined digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs) with preset-based programmability and optional external programming via the PG-200 controller. Developed by Roland, it featured 6-voice polyphony, two DCOs per voice, a resonant analog low-pass filter, and built-in chorus effects. Designed as a more affordable and stable alternative to fully programmable synthesizers, the JX-3P offered preset recall with limited onboard editing, making it a transitional instrument between preset keyboards and fully programmable synths.

    TRIVIA
The JX-3P was Roland’s first synthesizer to fully integrate MIDI, making it historically significant in early MIDI studio setups.

Its onboard interface was intentionally simplified, with most deep editing requiring the optional PG-200 programmer with physical knobs.

It used digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs), providing tuning stability while maintaining an analog signal path.

The instrument was part of Roland’s JX series, positioned between the more performance-oriented Juno line and earlier analog polysynths.

It became popular in early 1980s pop, synthpop, and electronic music due to its lush pads and stable tuning.

The PG-200 external programmer became almost essential for serious sound design and is now highly sought after by collectors.

Compared to the Juno series, it offered deeper modulation options but a less immediate front-panel workflow.

Today it is valued as an important early MIDI-era analog synthesizer and a bridge between preset and fully programmable synth designs.
