    Super JX - Polyphonic Synthesizer JX-10 © 1986 Roland.

The JX-10—affectionately dubbed the "Super JX"—stands as the final, most ambitious flagship analog synthesizer of Roland's pre-digital era. Arriving at a time when the industry was completely swept by the digital waves of the Yamaha DX7, Roland engineered the JX-10 to make a bold, uncompromising statement: combining the unmatched warmth of massive analog layers with the high-end microprocessor stability required by professional touring keyboardists and top-tier film composers.

The internal sound engine of the JX-10 is an absolute powerhouse, consisting of 12 true analog voices driven by 24 stable Digitally Controlled Oscillators (DCOs)—two per voice. Architecturally, the Super JX is essentially two complete Roland JX-8P synthesizers fused onto a single motherboard. Each voice cluster routes through a beautiful, resonant 24 dB-per-octave low-pass filter, a dedicated high-pass filter, three multi-stage envelope generators, and Roland's signature dual-mode analog chorus circuit. This dual-engine layout allows for full bitimbral control over its premium 76-note velocity and aftertouch-sensitive keyboard, giving players the ability to effortlessly Split or Layer two independent 6-voice patches to create colossal, evolving analog soundscapes.

The physical hardware matches its luxury pedigree, featuring a heavy, wide black metallic chassis, an elegant vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) that shows patch names in plain text, and a highly precise alpha-dial rotary data encoder. While the front panel was streamlined with flat membrane buttons to suit 1980s design trends, it includes a dedicated cartridge slot for external M-64C memory expanders, factory 5-pin MIDI connections, and a specialized port designed to interface with the optional PG-800 hardware programmer, which restores a dedicated physical slider or knob to every single internal synthesis parameter.

    TRIVIA
The Dual-Engine Powerhouse: Because the JX-10 houses two independent JX-8P voice boards (designated as Tone A and Tone B), it achieved a thickness of sound that single-board synthesizers simply could not replicate. Layering two distinct patches together allowed sound designers to create lush, sweeping pads, crystalline analog brass, and glass-shattering pads that became a staple of late-80s film scores and pop ballads.

The PG-800 Companion Piece: Programming the JX-10 through its sleek alpha-dial and membrane panels can be a slow, surgical process. To solve this, Roland designed the PG-800 Programmable Controller, a magnetic-backed box packed with 54 sliders that sits flat onto the right side of the JX-10's front panel. Connecting the PG-800 transforms the minimalist machine into a traditional, knobs-and-sliders analog synthesizer playground.

The Infamous Early MIDI Bug: Despite its flagship status, the early factory firmware of the JX-10 shipped with a notorious, deeply frustrating MIDI code flaw: it could not handle MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) data correctly. This meant that early 1986 models were unable to transmit or receive patch data dumps directly to a computer without freezing up. In modern times, the global synth community heavily relies on a brilliant, custom open-source replacement chip firmware developed by engineer Fred Vecoven, which completely fixes the MIDI bugs and turns the JX-10 into a flawless modern studio citizen.

A Masterclass in Soundtrack Presence: The Super JX excelled at reproducing complex, warm orchestral simulations and deep synth-basses. Its unique ability to cross-modulate oscillators and apply an organic, hardware analog chorus made it a favorite tool for legendary soundtracks and pop arrangements of the late '80s and early '90s, offering a distinctive, velvety analog texture that early digital samplers and FM synthesizers couldn't duplicate.
