The Roland MC-50mkII Micro Composer was an enhanced version of the MC-50 hardware MIDI sequencer, designed for professional music production without the need for a computer. Developed by Roland, it featured Roland's Super MRC sequencing system, 40,000-note internal memory, dual MIDI outputs supporting up to 32 simultaneous MIDI channels, and extensive event-level editing capabilities. The MC-50mkII added Standard MIDI File (SMF) compatibility and Smart FSK tape synchronization, making it one of the most powerful standalone MIDI sequencers of the early 1990s.
TRIVIA The MC-50mkII is an upgraded version of the 1990 MC-50, retaining the same workflow while adding several important professional features.
It introduced the ability to load and save Standard MIDI Files (SMF) directly from floppy disk, improving compatibility with computer-based sequencing systems.
The unit included Smart FSK tape synchronization, allowing MIDI sequences to be synchronized with analog multitrack tape recorders.
It featured Roland's highly regarded Super MRC (Micro Composer) software, inherited from the larger MC-500 series.
Two independent MIDI outputs allowed simultaneous control of up to 32 MIDI channels, an impressive capability for its era.
Internal memory could store approximately 40,000 notes, while floppy disk storage expanded capacity to around 90,000 notes.
Its famous Microscope Edit mode allowed users to inspect and edit individual MIDI events with extremely fine precision.
Like other Roland Micro Composers, it generated no sound of its own and was intended to control synthesizers, drum machines, and sound modules via MIDI.
Many musicians continued using the MC-50mkII long after computer-based DAWs became common, praising its reliability and dedicated workflow. Community discussions still describe it as one of Roland's most intuitive hardware sequencers once mastered.
Today it is regarded as one of the last great dedicated hardware MIDI sequencers before software-based sequencing became the dominant production method.
