The Roland S-550 was a professional rackmount digital sampler designed as the high-end successor to the S-50 sampling keyboard. It expanded the architecture with increased memory, deeper editing functions, and advanced filter and envelope control. It also introduced sophisticated external editing via CRT monitor and mouse systems, making it one of the earliest “computer-assisted samplers” in studio environments. The S-550 became a widely used production tool in late-1980s and early-1990s studios due to its flexibility, expansion capability, and integration into MIDI-based workflows.

TRIVIA

Its sound is often described as clean but slightly gritty due to 12-bit sampling architecture.

It supported disk libraries that became widely distributed in the early sampling era.

The S-550 directly influenced later Roland samplers such as the S-760 and S-770.
