    S-10 Digital Sampling Keyboard © 1986 Roland

The Roland S-10 Digital Sampling Keyboard was one of Roland’s earliest affordable samplers, designed to bring digital sampling into compact keyboard form. It used 12-bit PCM technology with a limited sample memory (around 256 KB total), allowing very short sampling time but enabling musicians to capture and play back real-world sounds across the keyboard. It stored data on proprietary 2.8-inch Quick Disks and provided basic editing tools, MIDI control, and multi-timbral playback, making it an important entry point into digital sampling in the mid-1980s.

    TECHNICAL
    49-key velocity-sensitive keyboard
    Sample recording via line/mic input
4 memory banks (A–D) for sound storage
Filter section (basic high-pass / low-pass digital filtering)
    Pitch shifting across keyboard range
MIDI In / Out / Thru
Quick Disk storage system (2.8" floppy format)
    Basic looping and editing functions
External monitor support (on related S-series workflow ecosystem)

    TRIVIA
The S-10 uses proprietary 2.8-inch Quick Disks, which stored only one sample per side, making disk management essential.

Despite its limitations, it became popular in early MIDI studios because it was one of the cheapest ways to access sampling in 1986–1987.

It shares its architecture with early S-series machines used in professional studios and film scoring workflows.

The limited memory and 12-bit resolution give it a distinct crunchy lo-fi character highly valued today.

It is often considered a “gateway sampler” into the Roland S ecosystem.
