    PSR-340 PortaSound © 1999 Yamaha

The Yamaha PSR-340 was a mid-entry PSR (PortaSound / PortaTone) arranger keyboard designed for home musicians, educators, and beginners moving toward more advanced arranger features. It used AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) sample-based synthesis and provided a large palette of preset voices, accompaniment styles, and performance functions. It is part of Yamaha’s late-1990s PSR generation, which expanded polyphony, improved sound quality, and added more advanced MIDI and style control features compared to earlier PSR models.

    TRIVIA
The PSR-340 uses AWM sample-based synthesis, Yamaha’s standard engine for late-1990s arranger keyboards.

It offers 32-note polyphony, allowing more complex arrangements than earlier PSR-150/180 class instruments.

It includes around 238 voices (including GM set) and 100 accompaniment styles, depending on configuration.

It features multi-mode auto-accompaniment with intro, main variations, fills, and endings for full arranger performance control.

It supports MIDI IN/OUT connectivity, making it usable as both a controller and sound module in basic MIDI setups.

It includes Yamaha’s typical Education Suite-style functions (lesson, practice, demo songs) aimed at beginners.

It is often grouped with the PSR-330 / PSR-340 / PSR-350 family, sharing the same design philosophy and engine generation.

It sometimes includes or is associated with disk-style data expansion (regional variants), depending on version.

It is frequently confused with earlier PSR models (PSR-16, PSR-180), but it is a fully different AWM generation instrument.

In Yamaha’s evolution, it sits just before the transition toward more modern arranger workstations and later PSR-S / Tyros systems.
