The Yamaha MU15 was a compact portable XG tone generator designed for mobile MIDI music production and beginner-friendly use. Developed by Yamaha, it used AWM2 sample-based synthesis and provided 32-voice polyphony with 16-part multitimbrality. Unlike rack modules, the MU15 featured a built-in mini control surface with buttons and small keys, allowing users to select voices and input notes directly without an external keyboard.

The MU15 is part of Yamaha’s portable MU-series devices, similar in concept to the MU5 but upgraded to XG sound generation.

It contains 676 instrument voices and 21 drum kits, using Yamaha’s XG extended GM soundset.

It supports 16-part multitimbrality and 32-voice polyphony, typical of entry-level XG modules of the late 1990s.

The device is battery-powered (AA cells) and designed for true portable MIDI use, including outdoor or mobile setups.

It includes a small built-in keypad / micro-keys, allowing basic performance input without external controllers.

It supports GM, XG, and TG300B compatibility modes, making it compatible with a wide range of MIDI files.

Despite its size, it includes a multi-effect system (reverb, chorus, variation effects) derived from Yamaha’s XG architecture.

It is often described as a “handheld Sound Canvas equivalent”, functioning as a self-contained MIDI sound source for sequencing systems.

The MU15 is considered one of the last “ultra-portable” MU-series devices before Yamaha shifted focus toward rack modules and computer integration.

It is frequently confused with the QY-series, but unlike QY units it does not include a full sequencer (sound module focus only).
