This chipset was the high-performance evolution of the UMC 481 series. While the 481 was a budget-focused ISA workhorse, the 491/493 pair was designed to handle the increased memory demands of the early 90s, offering support for larger cache sizes and faster memory interleaving.

TECHNICAL
Northbridge (UM82C491F): The main System Controller. It handled CPU communication and was significantly more efficient at managing memory cycles than the earlier 481/482 series.

Southbridge/Data Buffer (UM82C493F): Managed the data bus buffer and interface to the ISA peripherals.

If you have a board labeled "BIOTEQ," it is essentially a high-quality, factory-tuned UMC reference board. These are prized by collectors because they often shipped with a superior BIOS that had more advanced cache-timing options unlocked compared to generic UMC boards.

Stability: Unlike the "finicky" OPTi boards, the UMC 491/493 implementation is renowned for being able to handle a wide range of RAM sticks (different densities and speeds) without crashing. It is the "golden mean" board for a 386DX-40 build.
