    The 82C495XLC chipset was designed to handle the later, faster 386DX CPUs (like the 40MHz Am386DX) and the more demanding "486-upgrade" chips. It essentially "polished" the architecture of the SLC, offering better integration and higher throughput for the VESA Local Bus (VLB).

    Chipset Refinement: The primary upgrade over the SLC was the improved Cache Controller logic. The XLC handled "Write-Back" cache configurations much more reliably, which was the single biggest bottleneck for 386 systems trying to match 486 performance.

    VLB Stability: The VLB implementation on XLC boards is generally more stable than on the early SLC boards. The XLC chipset included dedicated logic to better buffer the bus signals, reducing the "flicker" or crashes often seen when using high-speed VLB graphics cards on 386-based systems.

    Hybrid Power: Like its predecessor, it supports the "486 upgrade" path, allowing you to seat a Cyrix 486DRx2 or a Ti486SXL directly into a 386 socket. The XLC was significantly more successful at this, as it could better manage the internal cache requirements of these "drop-in" 486 chips.

    TRIVIA
    The "40MHz King": If you were building a high-end 386DX-40 in 1993, an OPTi 82C495XLC-based motherboard with 256KB of cache and a VLB graphics card was the absolute peak of performance. It was effectively the "sleeper" system of the era.

    The Battery Issue: Much like the SLC boards, the XLC boards are infamous for the "barrel battery" (usually a Varta NiCd). Because the XLC chipset was often paired with these specific battery models, you will almost certainly find traces of alkaline corrosion on the I/O ports or the first ISA/VLB slot if the board has been in storage.
