The Roland S-220 was a rackmount digital sampler designed as the expanded studio counterpart to the S-10 sampling keyboard. It doubled the polyphony of the S-10 to 16 voices while maintaining the same 12-bit sampling engine and Quick Disk storage system. The S-220 allowed musicians to record, edit, loop, and play back samples across a MIDI setup, making it an early affordable studio sampler for keyboard rigs, guitar MIDI systems, and electronic production environments.

TRIVIA
The S-220 was sometimes referred to internally as a “MKS-100 style evolution” during early development discussions.
It uses the same Quick Disk ecosystem as the S-10, making early sample libraries interchangeable.
Despite being “limited” today, its 12-bit engine is valued for its gritty lo-fi character in modern sampling workflows.
It was commonly used with early MIDI rigs like Atari ST sequencers and hardware MIDI guitar systems.
The architecture is part of Roland’s early sampler family that later evolved into the highly advanced S-760.
