The 82C283 was a "single-chip" integration effort by OPTi, meant to provide a complete 386SX/AT-compatible platform without the high component count of earlier designs. In many implementations, it was paired with the OPTi 82C206 (IPC) to handle the peripheral requirements (DMA, interrupts, timers), creating a minimalist, ultra-reliable motherboard architecture.
TECHNICAL Core Role: Integrated System Controller, DRAM controller, and AT-Bus interface.
Processor Support: Specifically optimized for Intel/AMD 386SX and Cyrix 486SLC microprocessors.
Bus Architecture: Pure 16-bit ISA (AT Bus). It was a "no-frills" design, focusing on rock-solid compatibility with standard 16-bit expansion cards.
Memory: Typically supported up to 16MB of DRAM (30-pin SIMMs) using page-mode access.
Feature Integration: It included hardware-level support for Shadow RAM (BIOS shadowing) and "Hidden Refresh," which prevented the CPU from stalling during memory refresh cycles.
TRIVIA Olivetti Deployment: This chipset was notably used by Olivetti in several of their business-class 386SX workstations (e.g., the M300-15). These systems are highly regarded by collectors for their excellent build quality and custom BIOS implementations that often pushed the 82C283 slightly beyond its "reference" performance.
The "SxPI" Philosophy: OPTi marketed this as an "SxPI" solution. The "PI" stood for Peripheral Integrated. The goal was to eliminate the need for the dense "forest" of TTL logic chips that earlier 386 motherboards required to glue the CPU to the ISA bus.
