    333SC © 199? Chaintech

Released by the Taiwanese manufacturer Chaintech Computer Co. in the early 1990s (circa 1991–1992), the 333SC is a classic Baby AT form-factor motherboard built for the 32-bit Intel 80386DX processor architecture. Part of Chaintech’s unified 386 generation lineup (which included the 325S, 333S, and 340SC models), the "333" designation explicitly signifies its native baseline 33 MHz system bus and processor speed, while the "SC" tag marks the inclusion of a high-performance external Static RAM (SRAM) Level 2 Cache matrix.

The motherboard is designed around a standard Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC) or Pin Grid Array (PGA) socket accommodating the Intel 386DX-33 CPU, though it frequently hosted period-accurate alternatives like the AMD Am386DX-33 or the highly popular Cyrix Cx486DLC drop-in upgrade chip. For its memory subsystem, the 333SC features 8 legacy 30-pin SIMM RAM slots divided across two distinct banks, allowing a maximum configuration of 32MB of system memory. System performance is heavily accelerated by a dedicated SRAM L2 cache block, expandable from a baseline of 64KB up to 256KB via DIP-packaged cache chips.

Expansion options are purely legacy, featuring a row of 6 to 8 industry-standard 16-bit ISA slots (with some slots accommodating 8-bit short cards) to host vintage sound cards like the Sound Blaster Pro, network interfaces, and 16-bit ISA VGA graphics controllers (such as the Tseng Labs ET4000 or Trident 8900C). System timing, memory refresh cycles, and AT-bus synchronization are handled by a standard, highly reliable multi-chip chipset layout typical of the era—frequently sourced from OPTi or ALi.

    TRIVIA
The "SC" Performance Edge: During the early 90s, main system memory (DRAM) was significantly slower than the 386 processor itself, creating massive "wait states" where the CPU sat completely idle waiting for data. Chaintech added the "SC" (SRAM Cache) architecture to act as a hyper-fast staging area between the CPU and the RAM slots. By filling the onboard DIP sockets with 15-nanosecond (ns) high-speed Static RAM chips, users could cut down system wait states to absolute zero, boosting real-world DOS gaming frame rates in titles like Wolfenstein 3D.

The Cyrix 486 "Drop-In" Upgrade Path: Because the 333SC was engineered to be highly flexible with its system timings and voltage delivery, it became a favorite platform for mid-90s budget upgrades. When the 386DX became obsolete, users didn't need to replace the entire Chaintech board; they could simply pop out the 386 CPU and drop in a Cyrix Cx486DLC processor. This chip fit directly into the existing 386 socket but added an internal 1KB L1 cache and 486 instructions, instantly giving the motherboard a second life.

The TH99 Index Target: Due to the lack of silkscreened jumper labels on the green PCB face, configuring the 333SC for different RAM configurations or cache sizes requires an external reference sheet. In the modern retro-computing community, the board is heavily cataloged under the historic Total Hardware 99 (TH99) hardware database archive, which details the precise binary jumper layouts required to toggle between 64KB, 128KB, and 256KB cache capacities.
