    This chipset was the centerpiece of a generation of "feature-rich" 486 motherboards designed around 1994–1995. It was engineered to handle the high-speed requirements of the AMD Am5x86-P75 and Intel DX4 processors, providing a more robust implementation of PCI bus-mastering than earlier ALi designs.

    TECHNICAL
    Chipset:

    M1429 (Northbridge/System Controller): Handles CPU interface, cache control, and memory orchestration.

    M1431 (Southbridge/Peripheral Controller): Manages the PCI-to-ISA bridge, IDE, and Super I/O functions.

    Expansion: Designed for PCI/ISA configurations. It was a primary competitor to the SiS 496/497 and UMC 8498F.

    CPU Support: Full Socket 3 support. Known for excellent compatibility with high-clocked 486/5x86 CPUs.

    Memory: Typically supports up to 128MB or 256MB of EDO/FPM DRAM (4x 72-pin SIMM sockets).

    Cache: Advanced support for 256KB or 512KB "pipelined burst" L2 cache—a significant step up from the standard asynchronous cache used in earlier 386/486 boards.

    TRIVIA
    The "Pentium-Ready" 486: Many boards utilizing the ALi M1429 were marketed as "Pentium-Ready 486" boards. This was largely a marketing term, but it referred to the chipset's ability to handle the higher-speed memory timings required by the upcoming Pentium-class peripherals.

    Board Manufacturer Associations: This chipset was favored by manufacturers like PCChips (and their myriad of rebrands like Amptron, ECS, and ECS-related sub-brands) for their "budget-performance" boards. If you have a 486 board that uses this chipset and looks a bit "generic," it is almost certainly a PCChips-derivative design.
