The Yamaha PSR-40 was one of the early instruments in Yamaha’s PortaTone PSR series, designed for home entertainment and beginner players. It featured preset digital voices, built-in rhythm accompaniment, and automatic bass/chord functions typical of early arranger keyboards. It predates the standardized PSR naming conventions of the 1990s and represents an early phase of Yamaha’s transition from simple preset keyboards toward fully structured arranger systems.

The PSR-40 is part of Yamaha’s mid-1980s PortaTone era, before the PSR line became standardized into PSR-xx / PSR-1xx families.

It includes preset voices and built-in rhythm styles, with automatic accompaniment features (bass + chord generation).

It was designed primarily for home use and beginner musicians, not professional performance or sound design.

It predates Yamaha’s widespread use of AWM sample-based synthesis in PSR keyboards, making it part of an earlier digital preset generation.

It is often confused in databases with later PSR models (PSR-110, PSR-150), but it belongs to a much earlier design generation (mid-80s PortaTone architecture).

Instruments in this era typically relied on fixed preset sound chips and simple accompaniment engines, with very limited editing capabilities.

The PSR-40 helped establish the concept of Yamaha’s “all-in-one home arranger keyboard”, which later evolved into the PSR-E and Tyros/Genos families.
