    486-PIO-2 © 1995 First International Computer

The 486-PIO-2 was designed to be the definitive "Plug-and-Play" 486 motherboard. It utilized the robust SiS 496/497 chipset, which had proven itself to be the most stable solution for the final generation of 486-class processors, including the AMD Am5x86-P75. This board was intended for Windows 95–ready systems, prioritizing PCI stability and hardware compatibility over the experimental bus-bridging of earlier FIC boards.

    TECHNICAL
    Chipset: SiS 85C496 (Northbridge) / 85C497 (Southbridge).

CPU Support: Socket 3. Officially supports Intel 486DX, DX2, DX4, and is famous for its excellent native support for the AMD Am5x86-P75 (133 MHz).

Expansion: 3x PCI slots, 4x ISA slots.

Memory: 4x 72-pin SIMM sockets (supporting up to 128MB FPM/EDO DRAM).

    Form Factor: Baby AT.

    Cache: 256KB or 512KB L2 cache (DIP-socketed).

    TRIVIA
The "PIO" Designation: FIC used the "PIO" nomenclature to highlight the board's use of PCI and I/O integration. It was designed to work seamlessly with the newer PCI-based peripherals (like the S3 Trio64 graphics cards and PCI IDE controllers) that were becoming the standard in mid-1995.

Reliability: Because this board eliminated the VLB complexity, it is widely considered the most reliable FIC 486 board for modern-day retro-builders. It lacks the "bus contention" headaches of the hybrid boards, making it the perfect candidate for a "final" 486 build (the so-called "Ultimate 486" using the 5x86 processor).
