DG-10 Digital Guitar © 1987 Casio Computer Co., Ltd.

The Casio DG-10 Digital Guitar was a hybrid electronic instrument that combined a guitar-shaped controller with internal digital sound generation. Developed by Casio, it allowed players to trigger PCM-based instrument sounds and built-in rhythm patterns using a fretboard-style input system and pressure-sensitive strings. Unlike traditional guitars, pitch was determined electronically by fret position sensing rather than string vibration, while the strings primarily provided strumming and expression input. The DG-10 also included a built-in speaker and battery operation, making it a fully self-contained portable performance instrument.

    TRIVIA
The DG-10 was part of Casio’s experimental “Digital Guitar” lineup, which aimed to translate keyboard-style synthesis concepts into a guitar form factor.

Although it featured real strings, they were not used to generate sound; instead, they acted as controllers for strumming dynamics and triggering notes.

The fretboard used a pressure/contact-based detection system, meaning pitch was determined by where the player pressed rather than by string vibration.

It included built-in PCM tones such as organs, brass, and synth sounds, along with automatic rhythm accompaniment—similar to Casio’s home keyboards of the same era.

The instrument was fully self-contained with onboard speakers, reflecting Casio's focus on portability and “anywhere performance” design.

The DG-10 (and related DG-series instruments) are often considered early ancestors of later MIDI guitar controllers and hybrid performance systems.

Despite its toy-like appearance, it became a cult instrument among experimental musicians due to its unusual interface and distinctive lo-fi digital sound.
