Released on March 28, 1987 (Saturday) in Japan at a retail price of 369,000 JPY.
The first X68000 model was unveiled in October 1986 at the Electronics Show '86. It was exhibited in a corner of the Sharp booth, featuring a 65,536-color digitized image of female singer Yoko Oginome, a live video of the game Gradius titled "Gradius Self-Propelled", and a demonstration of a ray-traced chess ball bouncing across a chessboard. The display screen displayed a tropical-themed background and an emoji reading "Newly Developed 16-bit Personal Workstation X68000."
