Boss SX-700 Studio Effects Processor © 1996 Roland.

The Boss SX-700 Studio Effects Processor was a 1U rackmount digital multi-effects unit designed for studio engineers, producers, and live sound applications. Developed by Boss, a division of Roland Corporation, the SX-700 provided a wide range of high-quality effects including reverb, delay, modulation, dynamics processing, pitch shifting, and multi-effect chains configurable for complex studio routing. Positioned as a “studio-oriented” processor, it emphasized signal fidelity, flexibility, and MIDI integration, making it suitable for both recording environments and live rack setups. Its straightforward interface and preset-based workflow allowed quick access to professional-grade effects processing without requiring deep programming expertise.

    TRIVIA
The SX-700 was part of Boss’s push in the 1990s toward rackmount studio processors, alongside units such as the SE-70 and GX-700, each targeting slightly different user needs and price points.

Unlike pedal-based multi-effects units, the SX-700 was designed primarily for rack studio integration, with a focus on clean signal routing and consistent digital processing quality.

It supported MIDI control, allowing parameters and program changes to be automated from external sequencers—an increasingly important feature in mid-1990s production workflows.

The unit was often used for both instrument processing and general studio effects duties, such as adding reverb or delay to vocals, drums, and synths.

Its design reflected a transitional era in digital effects, bridging earlier algorithm-based processors and later COSM-based modeling systems that would define Roland/Boss products in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Although less famous than the SE-70 or GX-700, the SX-700 is remembered by studio users as a reliable “workhorse” effects unit with clean, usable sound and solid build quality.
