    S-50 Digital Sampling Keyboard © 1986 Roland

The Roland S-50 was one of Roland’s earliest professional sampling keyboards, expanding significantly on the simpler S-10. It featured 12-bit sampling with expanded memory, a 61-key velocity and aftertouch keyboard, and advanced editing capabilities using an external video monitor. It could store multiple samples, map them across the keyboard, and integrate deeply with MIDI sequencing systems, making it one of the first “full workstation-style” samplers available to musicians.

    TECHNICAL
    Expanded sampling memory vs S-10
Visual sample editing via external monitor (rare in 1986)
    Keymapping across keyboard ranges
    Loop editing and envelope shaping
    Multi-sample layering (basic multisampling capability)
    Disk-based sample library system
Advanced MIDI integration for sequencing setups
Studio-oriented sampler design (not just keyboard playback)

    TRIVIA
The S-50 was one of the first samplers to support external video output for waveform editing, using a CRT monitor instead of a small LCD interface.

It could be controlled with early computer peripherals like digitizer tablets (in later S-series workflows).

Despite its limited memory by modern standards, it became popular in late-1980s studios because it offered real sampling in a keyboard format with MIDI integration.

Its sound character is often described as clean but lo-fi due to 12-bit resolution and filtering stages.

The S-50 directly influenced later rack systems like the S-550, which became far more common in professional studios.
