    PSR-500 © 1991 Yamaha

The Yamaha PSR-500 was a consumer arranger keyboard aimed at home musicians and beginners seeking a more advanced feature set than entry PSR models. It used AWM sample-based synthesis and provided a wide selection of preset voices, automatic accompaniment styles, and basic sequencing features. It belongs to Yamaha’s transitional PSR generation, where FM-based consumer keyboards were being replaced by sample-based AWM technology.

    TRIVIA
The PSR-500 is part of Yamaha’s early transition era from FM synthesis to AWM sample-based sound engines.

It includes 61 keys and velocity-sensitive response (on most versions), making it more expressive than earlier entry PSR models.

It offers a large set of preset voices and around 100 accompaniment styles, typical of early 90s arranger keyboards.

It includes built-in sequencer and MIDI connectivity, allowing it to function as a basic music production tool.

It supports Yamaha’s auto-accompaniment system (styles with bass + chord + rhythm generation).

It was positioned as a mid-tier PSR model, above basic entry keyboards but below workstation-class arrangers.

It is frequently confused with later PSR models (PSR-150 / PSR-2000), but it belongs to an earlier generation.

Some listings and user reports place it in the early 1990s consumer synth wave, where Yamaha expanded MIDI-equipped home keyboards.

It is considered part of Yamaha’s “bridge generation” before PSR instruments became fully standardized AWM workstations.

Despite its age, it is still used today in retro setups due to its distinct early-90s Yamaha sound character.
