    PSR-190 © 1996 Yamaha

The Yamaha PSR-190 was a mid-level entry PortaTone arranger keyboard designed for beginners and home users. It used AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) sample-based synthesis and featured preset voices, automatic accompaniment styles, and simple performance tools. It belongs to Yamaha’s mid-1990s PSR generation, which standardized affordable digital keyboards with consistent AWM sound engines and built-in learning and accompaniment features.

    TRIVIA
The PSR-190 uses AWM sample-based synthesis, Yamaha’s standard digital engine for consumer keyboards in the 1990s.

It provides 61 keys and 12-note polyphony, limiting dense arrangements but suitable for beginner performance.

It includes 100 voices and 100+ accompaniment styles, with structured intro/fill/ending style sections typical of Yamaha arrangers.

It supports full auto-accompaniment (single-finger and fingered chord modes) for automatic backing tracks.

It is part of the same generation as the PSR-78, sharing core design and engine architecture.

It includes battery operation and built-in speakers, reinforcing its portable home keyboard identity.

It typically does not include MIDI (or only limited/region-dependent implementation), reflecting its beginner-focused design.

It helped define Yamaha’s late-90s beginner PSR format before the PSR-E series standardized the line.

Compared to earlier PSR-16 (FM-based), it uses a completely different AWM sample engine instead of FM synthesis.

It is often confused in databases with later PSR models due to numbering, but it clearly belongs to the 1996 AWM generation.
