    PS-400 © 1982 Yamaha

The Yamaha PS-400 was a consumer-oriented PortaTone keyboard designed for home entertainment and beginner musicians. It featured preset voices, automatic accompaniment styles, and built-in rhythm functions. It was part of Yamaha’s early PS series, which preceded the more standardized PSR and advanced FM-based consumer keyboards.

    TRIVIA
The PS-400 belongs to Yamaha’s pre-PSR standardization era, when naming conventions were still inconsistent (PS, PSR, PSS, etc.).

It was designed primarily for home entertainment and beginner learning, not professional performance.

It includes typical early Yamaha features such as auto-accompaniment (rhythm + bass/chord engine) and preset voices.

Instruments in this class often used simple Yamaha custom digital tone generator chips, before FM (DX/OPL) or later AWM sampling became standard.

Like many mid-80s home keyboards, it prioritizes preset playability over synthesis control.

It represents Yamaha’s transitional phase between simple preset keyboards and FM-based instruments (DX/PSR evolution).
