    PG-1000 - Linear Synthesizer Programmer © 1987 Roland

The Roland PG-1000 was a dedicated hardware programmer designed to provide deep real-time control of the Roland D-50 synthesizer and its rackmount counterpart, the D-550. It functioned as an external control surface with multiple sliders, allowing direct access to nearly all parameters of the LA (Linear Arithmetic) synthesis engine. Instead of relying on menu navigation, users could shape sounds interactively in real time, making the D-50 far more hands-on and performance-oriented.

    TRIVIA
The PG-1000 was designed specifically for the Roland D-50 / D-550 LA synthesis system, introduced in the same era (1987).

It provides dozens of physical sliders (around 50+ parameters at once), enabling immediate editing of envelopes, filters, and partial structures.

Communication is done via MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) messages, meaning it cannot control other synths outside the D-50 family.

It effectively turns the D-50 into a hands-on “analog-style” programming experience, despite being a digital synth.

It is often compared to later programmer-style controllers, but remains one of the most iconic dedicated synth editors of the 1980s.

The PG-1000 exposes the full complexity of LA synthesis (PCM attack + synthesized sustain hybrid structure).

It helped reduce the “menu diving” problem that early digital synths were known for.

Modern third-party controllers (like Dtronics units) are still inspired by its layout and philosophy.

It is sometimes paired with the D-50 in studios because it dramatically speeds up sound design workflow.

Unlike typical MIDI controllers, it is not general-purpose and only meaningful in its Roland ecosystem.
