The 82C291 was designed to provide a highly integrated, cost-effective platform for 386SX and Cyrix 486SLC processors. Unlike budget-focused SX chipsets that used simple write-through cache strategies, the 82C291 featured an integrated write-back cache controller, which significantly improved memory throughput and reduced CPU wait states.
TECHNICAL System Controller: 82C291 (160-pin PQFP).
Peripheral Controller: Typically paired with the 82C206 (IPC) to manage DMA, interrupt controllers, and system timers.
Processor Support: Optimized for the 386SX or Cyrix 486SLC at speeds ranging from 16MHz up to 33MHz (and sometimes 40MHz in overclocked/enthusiast configurations).
Cache: Supported direct-mapped Write-Back cache with programmable sizes (16KB, 32KB, 64KB, or 128KB), which was a premium feature for the 386SX segment.
Memory: Supported up to 16MB of DRAM in page mode, with advanced options like "Hidden Refresh" and support for shadow RAM for both system and video BIOS.
Bus Interface: Standard 16-bit ISA (AT Bus) with synchronous clock-dividing options for peripheral stability.
TRIVIA The "SXWB" Branding: OPTi marketed this chipset as the "SXWB" solution to bridge the performance gap between the 386SX's 16-bit external bus and the demands of newer 32-bit software. By offloading write operations to a local SRAM cache, it allowed an SX system to compete with entry-level 486DX systems in certain computing tasks.
