The Yamaha MU100B was a cost-reduced variant of the MU100 tone generator, designed for embedded systems and budget-conscious MIDI studio setups. Developed by Yamaha, it retained the same core AWM2 sample-based synthesis engine and XG compatibility as the MU100, including 64-voice polyphony and 32-part multitimbrality. The MU100B was distinguished by a simplified hardware design and reduced front-panel interface while maintaining full sound compatibility with the MU-series ecosystem.

The MU100B is part of the MU100 family, sharing the same sound engine as the MU100 and MU100R, but in a simplified form factor.

It supports 64-note polyphony and 32-part multitimbrality, making it suitable for full MIDI orchestration from a single module.

It includes 1,267 instrument voices and 46 drum kits, matching the MU100’s core sound set.

It supports Yamaha’s XG standard, as well as GM and TG300B compatibility modes.

The MU100B was designed with a lower-cost hardware configuration, often used in embedded or OEM-style applications.

It retains Yamaha’s PLG expansion system, allowing optional synthesis boards to extend its capabilities.

Some MU100B variants were used in embedded music systems and software bundles, rather than standalone studio racks.

Compared to the MU100/MU100R, it typically features a simplified display and reduced user interface controls.

It still supports A/D input routing through internal effects, allowing external audio processing.

It sits in the MU ecosystem as a “value-oriented XG module” rather than a flagship unit like MU128 or MU2000.
