    MC-300 - Micro Composer © 1988 Roland.

The Roland MC-300 Micro Composer was a hardware MIDI sequencer designed for studio composition and computer-free music production. Developed by Roland, it was part of the MC (Micro Composer) series and functioned as a more compact and affordable alternative to the MC-500. The MC-300 provided multitrack MIDI sequencing, real-time and step recording, and disk-based storage using 3.5-inch floppy disks, making it a key tool in early MIDI-based studios.

    TRIVIA
The MC-300 is closely related to the MC-500 and is largely compatible with its sequencing format and operating system (Super-MRC / MRC software family).

It offered multitrack MIDI sequencing (up to 16 MIDI channels) and was widely used in pre-DAW studio workflows.

The unit stored songs on 3.5-inch floppy disks, with typical capacities ranging from tens of thousands to over 100,000 notes depending on the operating system version.

It supported both real-time recording and step sequencing, allowing precise editing of MIDI data (“microscopic editing” workflows typical of Roland MC systems).

A dedicated rhythm track allowed drum programming separate from melodic sequencing tracks.

The MC-300 shares much of its software architecture with the MC-500 MkII, with main differences being memory capacity and hardware implementation rather than sequencing concept.

It became popular in late-1980s studios as a reliable “hardware brain” before computer sequencing (Atari ST / early Mac DAWs) became dominant.

It is often described as a “little brother” of the MC-500, with slightly reduced memory and a simpler physical build.

Today it is considered a classic example of Roland’s Micro Composer philosophy: precise, disk-based MIDI sequencing without a computer.
