The IBM Personal Computer XT (Model 5160) is an enhanced successor to the original IBM PC 5150.
Based on the Intel 8088 processor running at 4.77 MHz, it extends the original PC architecture with key improvements aimed at business users. The XT introduces a standard internal hard disk drive (typically 10–20 MB), expanded memory support up to 640 KB, and an increased number of ISA expansion slots (8 instead of 5), allowing greater system expandability.
It also removes the cassette tape interface found on the original IBM PC, reflecting its focus on professional and office environments rather than home computing. The system runs PC DOS / MS-DOS and supports a wide range of business applications, becoming a major standard for early IBM PC compatibles.
The IBM 5160 played a crucial role in establishing the “IBM PC compatible” ecosystem, which defined the direction of personal computing throughout the 1980s.
