The Alesis HR-16B Digital Drum Machine was an expanded and alternative sound version of the original HR-16, designed to offer a more electronic and production-oriented drum palette. Developed by Alesis, it featured the same 16-bit PCM-based architecture, 49 internal drum sounds, MIDI implementation, and pattern-based sequencer as the HR-16, but with a revised ROM set focused on electronic, processed, and synthetic percussion sounds. The HR-16B quickly became popular in electronic, industrial, and dance music production due to its sharper and more stylized drum timbres.
TRIVIA The “B” version stands for a revised sound ROM, not a hardware redesign, making it largely identical in functionality to the original HR-16.
It replaced many acoustic-style drum samples with more synthetic and processed percussion sounds, making it more suitable for electronic genres.
Both HR-16 models were among the first widely successful affordable 16-bit drum machines on the market.
The HR-16 series became known for its fast programming workflow, which was particularly appealing in early MIDI-based studios.
It included multiple individual outputs, allowing separate processing of drum voices in studio mixing environments.
The HR-16B helped define the sound of late-1980s electronic and industrial music alongside other early digital drum machines.
It competed directly with drum machines from Roland and Korg, but at a significantly lower price point.
Today it is appreciated for its distinctive, punchy 16-bit sound and its role in making professional drum production more accessible.
