Emulator Three Digital Sound Production System © 1987 E-mu Systems.

The E-mu Emulator III Digital Sound Production System was a flagship professional sampler designed for high-end studio production and film scoring. Developed by E-mu Systems, it represented a major leap forward in sampling technology with 16-bit linear PCM resolution, significantly improved audio fidelity over its predecessors, and a powerful digital architecture for sound editing and performance. The Emulator III featured extensive memory expansion, sophisticated sample editing tools, and high-quality analog-style filtering, positioning it as one of the most advanced sampling systems of its time.

    TRIVIA
The Emulator III was E-mu’s first true 16-bit sampler, marking a significant step up from the 8-bit Emulator II.

Despite its technical power, it retained the characteristic E-mu sound due to its analog-style resonant filter design.

It was heavily used in film scoring, television production, and high-end music studios where sound quality and flexibility were critical.

The system supported extensive memory expansion, which was essential for handling large orchestral and cinematic sample libraries.

It featured a more modern user interface compared to earlier Emulator models, improving workflow efficiency for professional users.

The Emulator III competed directly with early versions of Akai’s S-series and other emerging professional samplers of the late 1980s.

It was significantly more expensive than most competing samplers, reinforcing its status as a high-end studio centerpiece.

Today it is considered one of the defining high-end samplers of the late 1980s, bridging the gap between early sampling systems and the 1990s workstation era.
