    W-30 - Music Workstation © 1988 Roland

The W-30 is a historic, self-contained sampling music workstation that combined a 61-note velocity and aftertouch-sensitive keyboard, an onboard sampler, and a powerful multi-track MIDI sequencer into a single physical unit. It was designed to serve as an all-in-one production hub for home studios and touring professionals.

Internally, the W-30 brings together three distinct pieces of Roland hardware legacy: the sound architecture of the S-550 rack sampler, the advanced software layout of the MRC sequencing engine (similar to the standalone MC-500 MKII hardware sequencer), and a dedicated 512 Kword digital ROM pool. The sampler operates with a 12-bit resolution and a 30 kHz sampling rate, providing roughly 14.4 seconds of total mono sampling time. Because it utilizes structural data models compatible with Roland's premium S-series, it can directly read and execute floppy disk sound libraries from the S-50, S-330, and S-550 samplers.

The W-30 features a 16-voice polyphony architecture, an 8-channel multi-timbral mixer layout, and a large 240x64 pixel backlit LCD screen that dramatically simplified wave editing and track composition compared to the tiny LED screens of its predecessors. The back panel is notably equipped with eight individual assignable polyphonic audio outputs, allowing for precise external processing and mixing of individual instruments or drum parts.

    TRIVIA
The Prodigy's Backbone: The W-30 is legendary for being the primary production tool and master keyboard for Liam Howlett of The Prodigy. He famously wrote almost the entirety of their early groundbreaking rave tracks (including Charly, Everybody in the Place, and the Experience album) entirely on a standalone W-30, and it remained his main live master stage keyboard until 2008.

MC Hammer's Secret Weapon: Producer Felton Pilate revealed that the only sampler used on MC Hammer’s diamond-certified 1990 album Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em (featuring U Can't Touch This) was the Roland W-30.

    Other Notable users:
    Eric Sermon (EPMD)
    Steve Hillier (Dubstar)
    Andrés Bobe (La Ley)
    DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia)

Also, Heroiuki Iwatsugi Used the W-30 to write the music for the Super Famicom game; Wild Guns.

The Real-Time Filter Hack: Officially, a common complaint among keyboardists was that the W-30 lacked dedicated real-time control knobs to sweep the internal digital TVF (Time Variant Filter). However, clever producers discovered a workaround by digitally mapping the filter cutoff to the "Breath Controller" parameter and linking it to a standard expression foot pedal.

The Boot Disk Requirement: Much like the S-series rack units, the W-30 does not store its primary operating system in firmware ROM. It requires a system boot floppy disk to be physically inserted into the 3.5-inch drive every time the machine is powered on; without the disk, the workstation cannot load its interface or generate sound.
