The Yamaha PSR-60 was one of the earliest instruments in the PortaTone PSR series. It combined a 4-operator FM synthesis engine with PCM-based rhythm accompaniment and automatic bass/chord functions. It was designed for home musicians and beginners, offering preset orchestral voices, built-in styles, and simple performance controls. The PSR-60 represents Yamaha’s first wave of PSR arranger keyboards, before the later AWM-based standardization of the 1990s.
TRIVIA The PSR-60 uses a 4-operator FM synthesis engine, closely related to Yamaha’s DX-series technology but simplified for consumer use.
It offers preset orchestral voices and monophonic “solo” sounds, depending on mode selection.
It includes auto bass chord (ABC) accompaniment, enabling automatic backing tracks from played chords.
It supports MIDI IN/OUT connectivity, which was very early for consumer keyboards of this class.
It features PCM percussion sounds for rhythm generation layered on FM voices.
It is part of the PSR-50 / PSR-60 early PSR family, one of the first PSR-branded keyboards (mid-1980s).
It predates Yamaha’s later AWM sample-based PSR generation (PSR-110, PSR-150, etc.).
It was designed for home entertainment and beginner performance, not professional synthesis.
It helped define Yamaha’s “arranger keyboard” concept: voices + styles + auto-accompaniment in one instrument.
It is frequently confused with later PSR models, but it belongs to a much earlier FM-based generation.
