The Yamaha MU100 was a high-end XG-compatible tone generator designed for professional MIDI studios, sequencing systems, and computer-based music production. Developed by Yamaha, it used AWM2 sample-based synthesis and offered 64-voice polyphony with 32-part multitimbrality. It featured a large ROM soundset, advanced multi-effect processing, and support for optional PLG expansion boards, making it a flexible and expandable sound module within Yamaha’s MU-series ecosystem.

The MU100 is part of Yamaha’s MU-series XG generation, introduced after earlier models like the MU80 and MU90, expanding sound capacity and polyphony significantly.

It offers 64-note polyphony and 32-part multitimbrality, allowing complex arrangements to be played from a single module.

The internal sound ROM contains around 1267 instrument voices and 46 drum kits, covering orchestral, electronic, and GM/XG categories.

It supports Yamaha XG, General MIDI, and TG300B compatibility modes, ensuring broad MIDI file compatibility across different standards.

A key feature is its PLG expansion slot, allowing installation of additional synthesis boards (FM, physical modeling, vocal synthesis, etc.).

It includes A/D inputs, enabling external audio (microphones or instruments) to be processed through onboard effects.

It belongs to the generation that expanded XG into a fully studio-oriented modular ecosystem, bridging GM playback and professional workstation-style sound modules.

The MU100 also exists in rack variant form as the MU100R, intended for professional rack studio installations.

It was commonly used in computer MIDI setups during the late 1990s, often paired with sequencers, early DAWs, and soundcards.

The MU100 helped establish Yamaha’s MU-series as a standard reference for XG playback quality before the MU128 flagship expanded the platform further.
