Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder © 1994 Capcom Company, Limited.

Eye of the Beholder is a seminal first-person dungeon crawler developed by Westwood Associates and ported to the Super Famicom in 1994. Based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset, the game drops a party of four adventurers into the sewers beneath the city of Waterdeep to investigate rumors of encroaching evil. Players navigate a grid-based, 3D labyrinth, managing their party's real-time combat, spellcasting, and survival needs while facing iconic creatures from the D&D bestiary. Unlike the PC original, which utilized a mouse-driven interface, this console conversion adapts the complex command menus for the standard controller, focusing on exploration and puzzle-solving in a claustrophobic, dark-fantasy environment.

    TRIVIA
The Westwood Legacy: Before they became famous for the Command & Conquer series, Westwood Associates were masters of the CRPG genre. Eye of the Beholder was their first collaboration with SSI to bring the Gold Box style of dungeon crawling into a more immersive, real-time perspective.

The "Beholder" Antagonist: The game’s title refers to the Beholder, one of the most iconic and feared monsters in Dungeons & Dragons lore. These spherical, floating horrors possess a central anti-magic eye and multiple eyestalks capable of firing deadly magical rays, serving as the terrifying final challenge of the game.

Platforming Hurdles: Bringing this game to the Super Famicom was a major technical undertaking. Because the original PC version relied heavily on "point-and-click" interaction for inventory management and combat, the console port had to redesign the entire UI to be functional using only a D-pad and controller buttons, which often makes it more challenging to manage party equipment quickly during heated battles.

A Faithful Adaptation: Despite the hardware limitations, the Super Famicom version manages to retain a high degree of fidelity to the original game's map layouts and monster encounters, maintaining the oppressive atmosphere that made the original a hit among tabletop roleplayers.

Soundtrack Atmosphere: The console port features a haunting, minimalist soundtrack that differs from the PC original. It focuses on eerie, ambient sound effects and melodic cues that amplify the feeling of being trapped in a crumbling, ancient dungeon.

D&D Authenticity: For enthusiasts of the source material, the game remains one of the most faithful representations of the 2nd Edition D&D rules on the console, correctly simulating character stats, saving throws, and the specific limitations of Vancian magic (where wizards must memorize spells before casting them).
